Class description:

We welcome you to join us for this three day adventure in stained glass. On Friday evening we will get the opportunity to get to know each other and our instructor Dayna Tauro. Dayna will share her love for the art of stained glass and her passion for reusing salvaged window frames. She will facilitate a small introductory project to get the creativity flowing for the following days and to ease any tensions we may have regarding working with glass.

Saturday we will learn the basic principles of building stained glass with the copper foil method and Dayna will share with you the many tricks of the trade that she has added to her tool belt. Dayna will prove that breaking glass does not have to be scary if you properly use the tools. She will guide us step by step through glass cutting tools and techniques with demonstrations and practice. The experienced and the beginner will benefit from Dayna’s detailed lessons on working with the temperamental behaviors of glass. This day will also cover the topics of construction, design and installation. We will learn why the principles of building a window to size can vary from free form stained glass. Dayna will teach us how to find and prepare old window sashes and how to install our new stained glass work of art. All of these techniques will be done on a small window panel and installed into a wooden frame that we will take home.

By Sunday we will each have a finished piece to share and discuss. It will be a great opportunity to explore taking your work to the next level and discuss any uncovered questions. We will walk away with a greater appreciation for stained glass art, a deeper understanding of the tools and materials, new friendship and creative energy!

A message from Dayna:

I am a crafter and a lover of all things handmade! I believe strongly in the benefits of crafting using your own two hands and I love to work with glass. My journey in glass art began in 2002, when I was living in Berkeley, California. I was offered a position at a stained glass store and would need to learn how to build stained glass windows through their courses. I jumped at the opportunity and spent the following years studying the techniques, gaining skills, and forming relationships with suppliers and local glass artisans. It didn’t hurt that I discovered a certain knack for the necessary skills of cutting glass and soldering.

By 2007, I had ventured out on my own, contracting to build and restore windows for various Bay Area stained glass operations, as well as designing and teaching courses in stained glass and mosaic art. In 2008, I was happy to join the staff at the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland, California where I was continuously inspired, learned many new skills, and met amazing mosaic artists from around the world. After a year there, I made my way across the country back to my roots on the East coast, bringing with me a deep knowledge of the glass art industry and a car full of colorful sheets of glass and boxes of tools. When I arrived in the Northeast, I quickly immersed myself in the local art community and have continued to take part in shows, teach courses, and sell my own work across the country.

I currently have a studio in Montpelier, Vermont where I recently introduced The Roots of Glass, my new line of handcrafted whimsical stained glass birds and flowers and one of a kind windows framed in salvaged window sashes. I find it important to preserve the techniques and craftsmanship of the past, to work with my hands and to salvage wasted materials to create new works of beauty. My designs tend toward the calm and relax of nature and my goal is to create works using old methods while taking glass art to new places. When I am not crafting, I can be found at my day job teaching adults with developmental disabilities, at home cooking dinner with my boyfriend, and learning the art of baking bread.
